World Champion Manipuri weightlifter Mirabai Chanu wins first gold for India at CWG 2018
After breaking six records in six lifts in women’s 48 KG category Saikhom Mirabai Chanu went up on the podium and Jana Gana Mana played for the first time in Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
The 23 year old world champion Manipuri weightlifter had won a silver medal four years back at Glasgow CWG, but this time the Indian powerhouse was determined to go a step further. She finished first with a combined effort of 196 KG breaking her previous record of 194 KG.
Before Mirabai Chanu’s excellence India won a Silver in day one of the event. Gururaja Poojary lifted total of 249 KG to win India’s first medal in the 21st CWG. 25 year old Poojary is an Indian Air Force employee and hails from a small village in Karnataka.
