'Ya Hussein' chants rang loud in Hailakandi during Muharram procession
Tens of thousands of Muslims mourners observed Muharram across Hailakandi district with religious fervour and solemnity. The District Muharram Committee observed the day at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose stadium under District Sports Association (DSA) playground in Hailakandi town with hoisting of the flag by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Amalendu Roy, Additional Superintendent of Police, Jagadish Das, president and secretary of the committee, Lalu Miah and Sirajuddin Barbhuiya respectively.Speaking on the occasion, ADC Roy asked the Muslim community to observe Muharram peacefully and with due solemnity. Addressing the congregation, Additional SP, Jagadish Das urged the Muslim community to respect the sacrifice of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and pray in abundance as well as refrain from any celebrations and festivities as Muharram is observed as period of mourning. The mourning period starts on the Ist day of Muharram and lasts for 10 days till the day of death of Imam Hussein in the great battle of Karbala.
Noted advocate Nurul Alam spoke on Muharram and its historical and religious significance. Alam said that Imam Hussein’s message of kindness, justice and equality lives on among people who love and respect him and therein lies his real victory. Scores of mournful processions from different parts of the district entered Hailakandi town through six entry points and assembled at the DSA playground. The traffic authorities regulated the flow of traffic along the fixed routes with ban on plying of two-wheelers. Muharram was also celebrated at Lala Rural College field and Gharmurra forest field with thousands of mourners taking out processions with chanting of ‘ya Hussein’ rent the air.
