Yaas: Government asks DCs to be vigilant as IMD warns "Light to Moderate" rainfall in Assam

India Meteorological Department – an agency of the Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Government of India confirmed that Yesterday’s cyclonic storm “YAAS” over East-Central Bay Of Bengal moved north-northwestwards and intensified into a severe cyclonic storm in the same midnight (2330 hrs IST of 24th May).

Further moving north-northwestwards, it lay centred at 0830 hrs IST of today, (May 25) over Westcentral and adjoining East-Central & North Bay of Bengal near latitude 18.3°N and longitude 88.3°E, about 280 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 380 km South-Southeast of Balasore (Odisha), 370 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal) and 370 kms south-southwest of Sagar Islands (West Bengal). It is very likely to move north-northwestwards, intensify further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 12 hours.

It would continue to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach Northwest Bay of Bengal near north Odisha coast very close to Chandbali-Dhamra port by the early morning of Wednesday, the 26th May. It is very likely to cross north Odisha-West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Island close to north of Dhamra and south of Balasore, during noon of Wednesday, the 26th May as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm.

‘Yaas’ will have its impact in Assam too. IMD in its warning stated that Assam & Meghalaya to witness Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on 25th & 26th May.

With reference to the subject cited above and advisory, CEO of Assam State Disaster Management Authority, Gyanendra Tripathi ordered the deputy commissioners of all districts to remain vigilant. The order states, “You are requested to keep vigil in the riverine and flood-prone areas of your district. Further fire and emergency services, NDRF, civil defence and other response forces may also be kept on alert mode on 26th and 27th May till midnight.
