Youngsters join hands to launch Covid Outbreak Helpline platform for Barak Valley; Website is live
The Corona crisis has challenged and hit the health infrastructure of the country pretty bad. As people in many places are fighting over hospital beds and oxygen cylinders to fight this deadly Covid-19 virus, having adequate stock of surviving essentials like a blood bank, plasma bank and most importantly, the vaccine has become of paramount importance. Even though the vaccination process is still on, the rate of spread of the virus is far more than the rate at which the common people are getting vaccinated. Amid such an atmosphere, many helping hands have come forward to assist the administration and the health workers in managing this Covid crisis.
‘Eco Alarmist’ is one such organization, run by a group of young eco and nature enthusiasts from Silchar, which has done a tremendous amount of work starting from the first lockdown of March 2020. Starting from delivering services of essentials and medicines to arranging ambulance for the needy to organizing blood and plasma donation campaigns, the ‘Eco Alarmist’ NGO has set an exemplary benchmark of social service during the pandemic in the entire Barak Valley.
Starting its journey in the year 2017, ‘Eco Alarmist’ was founded by Subhadeep Purkayastha, a currently a B.Tech student in Assam University, Silchar, as a pro-environment and eco-awareness campaign to conserve nature and spread awareness through various activities. When the entire world got hit by the Coronavirus pandemic last year, Subhadeep and some of his friends came up with the idea of helping the Covid warriors in fighting this battle against the Coronavirus. The ‘Eco Alarmist Foundation’ was official registered as an NGO at Registrar of Companies, Shillong on April 13, 2021, under the Regn. No. 21246. Subhadeep Purkayastha and Sattam Dhar are the active Directors of the NGO, and the rest of the core members of the NGO are Parnadh Sinha, Sreesha Gupta, Kathakali Dutta and Namrata Nandi.
While talking to Barak Bulletin, the Founder of Eco Alarmist Foundation Subhadeep Pukayastha said, “Initially when I started in 2017, it was just a Facebook page sharing facts and stories promoting environmental awareness and campaigns. But then after some time, I started to get actively involved in the fieldwork like organizing workshops and events with school children, conducting seminars and campaigns like donation campaign of discarded clothes to donate for homeless people, etc. When the Covid hit us, and subsequently the lockdown was announced, a few friends of mine approached me with the idea of helping out the health workers with essential services. So, we started organizing blood and plasma donation campaigns and delivery services needed for them to assist the common people as well as the health workers during the crisis time. Also, in providing essential Covid services, we’ve partnered up with local start-ups like ‘Drutoo’ for emergency delivery services for Covid patients, ‘MedOnline’ for services related to medicines, ‘deFreshBox’ for delivery related to grocery and other household materials.” The official website of the NGO was designed by Subhadeep Purkayastha and Tathagata Bhattacharjee.
Currently, apart from providing different types of delivery services for the common people, they’re also heavily involved in establishing the link between the needy people and the concerned health department when it comes to donating blood or plasma or any medical assistance for that matter.
“Suppose, someone is willing to donate plasma but doesn’t know the prerequisite procedure or the proper place to go for that matter. They can reach out to us through our website or contact no. or e-mail, and we’ll fetch all of the person’s prerequisite details and assign him/her to the concerned department or health personnel to proceed. If it’s about plasma donation, we’ll assign him/her to someone in charge of the plasma bank or if it’s about something else, we’ll do similarly as well. So, basically, we provide networking to facilitate medical assistance to people amidst the Corona pandemic”, said Subhadeep of the Eco Alarmist Foundation.
It is also worth mentioning that due to the vaccination drive getting open to the 18+ age group starting from May 2, the Eco Alarmist has initiated a campaign targeted towards the youth to donate blood before getting vaccinated. Once after getting vaccinated, the person won’t be allowed to donate blood for one month, hence this campaign named ‘Blood Before Vaccination’ calls all youths of Barak Valley above 18 years of age to donate blood before taking the Covid-19 vaccine shot.
