Youth falls into well in Udharbond, Rushed to SMCH with severe injuries after SDRF Rescue
In a tragic incident on Friday, Kartik Munda, a young resident of the Arunabond Tea Garden, fell into a deep well and sustained serious injuries. The mishap occurred in the morning when Munda slipped and plunged into the uncovered well, which lacked proper demarcation or a guard ring.
Local residents immediately attempted to rescue him, but their efforts were in vain due to the well’s depth. An eyewitness recounted the event, stating, “I heard the sound of him falling and rushed to help. I brought a long bamboo, but he was out of reach, spluttering in the water to stay afloat. The well was really deep, and I couldn’t climb down to help. Even our neighbour, Kuti da, who works in the Police Department, tried to assist, but we had no way to pull him out. Eventually, Kuti da called the SDRF, who arrived and rescued him.”
Following the rescue by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Kartik Munda was immediately transported to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. His condition remains severe.
This incident has highlighted the urgent need for proper safety measures around wells in the area to prevent such accidents in the future. Another severe incident happened on May 20 in the Fulertol area where 5 people got stuck inside the well and three died from the injuries. Later the community as immediate action covered off the hazardous well to ensure the safety of residents.
