Youth sits on hunger-strike in Hailakandi to convince girlfriend's parents for marriage
A youth sat on a hunger-strike on Monday near his girlfriend’s house at Abdullapur (Part-I) in Hailakandi district to convince his girlfriend’s parents about their marriage.
On Monday afternoon, the youth Pinku Roy, who hails from the same village, went near his girlfriend’s house with a tent, towel and few other items and sat on the hunger-strike. Abdullapur falls under Lala tehsil, around 50km from Silchar.
Pinku told onlookers that he sat on the hunger-strike to convince his girlfriend’s parents for their consent to marry his girlfriend. He said he would not call off the strike until he married his girlfriend or got an assurance from her parents about their marriage.
The news of the youth’s hunger-strike spread like a wildfire in the village with a large number of people gathering to have a glimpse of the “crazy lover”.
Some people tried to beat up Pinku for his “outrageous” act. Meanwhile, local panchayat member Riyaj Uddin along with few other villagers, who rushed to the spot after receiving the information, informed Abdullapur police outpost about the matter. A team of police reached the spot within a short period of time and brought Pinku to the outpost.
Sources said the parents of the girl (Pinku’s girlfriend) has been maintaining an “unwilling” attitude about their daughter’s marriage with Pinku, who comes from a financially weak background.
