Fake Gynaec Case: Malakar Names Others, Hospitals; Wrong Surgery Allegation Surfaces, CM Monitoring Probe
The arrest of alleged fake gynaecologist Pulak Malakar has sent fresh tremors through Barak Valley’s medical circles. Malakar, who was caught by the Police, practising with forged credentials, had worked across multiple private hospitals in the region.
Police are now probing inconsistencies in hospital accounts and the apparent loopholes that allowed unqualified individuals into critical care roles.
Confession and Patient Testimony
Sources close to the Cachar Police said Malakar has admitted that the forged medical certificate he used was also obtained by two others still practising in private hospitals in the Valley.
In a grave new revelation, a female patient’s attendant has come forward voluntarily to the police. In his statement, he said he had booked an online consultation with Malakar, who ordered diagnostic tests and diagnosed an infection in her left uterine horn. Surgery was advised. On the operating table, however, Malakar allegedly operated on the right side of the uterus – the healthy side, leaving the infected left side untreated. When her condition did not improve, she returned to Malakar, who then performed surgery on the correct side. The account has been formally recorded by a senior district police officer.
Suspected Nexus and Hospital Links
Investigators suspect Malakar is part of a wider network of unqualified practitioners in Barak Valley. According to sources, many enter hospitals as ward boys or technicians before becoming surgical assistants and eventually taking over procedures inside operating theatres without formal medical training.
At the centre of this suspected nexus is a prominent public figure now joined by an advocate, who is said to be working over time to shield Malakar. Sources believe their concern lies less in protecting Malakar himself and more in preventing the network’s exposure.
Names of several private hospitals have surfaced during interrogation – Valley Hospital, JJIMS, Garacewell Hospital, apart from the Siva Sundari Nari Sikshasram. Police are working to establish the exact nature of Malakar’s association with each medical institutions. The Cyber Crime Department has also begun examining doctor-booking platforms to identify hospitals that officially listed “Dr Pulak Malakar” for patient appointments. The platforms have now deleted the page listed to book appointments with this doctor.
Barak Bulletin is also in a position to confirm that the chief minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, is himself monitoring the probe and is likely to seek an official report from Cachar Police.
SSP, Numal Mahatta, refused to provide a statement at this stage as the investigation is currently going on.
The Police officials are confident that more patients and attendants will come out in Public or to the nearest police stations to register their complaints and share their tales of being treated by Pulak Malakar – the fake doctor under arrest.
