Father Allegedly Sells 15-Day-Old Son for Rs. 25,000 in Hailakandi; Child Believed to Be in Cachar
Cruelty has climbed another height, a man from Bandukmara village in Hailakandi district has allegedly sold his 15-day-old infant son for Rs. 25,000. The accused, Abdur Rauff Laskar, is said to be a habitual gambler involved in teer lottery and other illicit activities. According to villagers, Laskar had previously lost his home to gambling and now lives with his in-laws.
A local resident said, “On the morning of June 23, we came to know that Abdur Rauff had sold his newborn son the previous night. He’s always been involved in gambling. Despite many of us pleading with him not to do it, he said it was his child and he could do as he pleased. A red Alto car arrived late at night and took the child away. When his wife and in-laws questioned him, he fled and has been hiding since.”
The matter was reported to the Child Helpline (1098), and the Hailakandi District Child Protection Unit immediately began investigating the case. Preliminary information revealed that the infant was allegedly sold to a family in the Cachar district for Rs. 25,000. A man named Zakariya Ahmed Barbhuiya, who runs a restaurant in Kabuganj and resides near Bandhan Bank, has been named as a key person with knowledge of the child’s current whereabouts.
The Child Welfare Committee, Hailakandi, has formally reached out to their counterparts in Cachar, requesting urgent support to trace and rescue the infant. The letter mentions that the child’s exact location is believed to be known only to the accused individual in Cachar, and immediate intervention is essential to ensure the child’s safety.
Authorities have assured that a coordinated rescue operation is underway, and locals have demanded stringent punishment for the father and anyone else involved in the illegal sale of the child.
