Fishermen’s Prompt Action Saves Woman Who Jumped From Railway Bridge Over Barak

A young woman was rescued alive after she jumped into the Barak River from the Katigorah railway bridge connecting the Badarpur and Katigorah banks on Wednesday afternoon (December 17), owing to the timely intervention of two fishermen.

The incident occurred late in the afternoon on the Badarpur–Lumding railway route. The woman’s fall into the river was noticed by two fishermen who were fishing nearby. Acting swiftly, they rushed towards her in a country boat and managed to pull her out of the river, bringing her safely to the riverbank. By the time the rescue was completed, a crowd had gathered at the spot.

Following the incident, police personnel, along with staff of the Fire and Emergency Services, reached the location. Police took the woman to the local Model Hospital, where she was admitted for treatment. Hospital sources said her condition improved after medical care, and she is now out of danger.

Police said the woman hails from Rajatilla, a village in Harinagar, along the India–Bangladesh border. Her identity was confirmed, and her family members were informed. Later in the night, family members took her home after she was discharged from the hospital.

The fishermen who rescued her said they were some distance away when the incident occurred. “We immediately rowed towards her and managed to pull her out by holding onto her clothes. Even a small delay could have proved fatal,” one of them said.

During preliminary interaction, the woman reportedly told the rescuers that she had taken the extreme step following distress in her personal life. Police said the matter is being looked into.
