
Five Injured, Including Police Officer, in Two Back-to-Back Road Accidents on Silchar-Imphal Highway
Five people, including a police officer, were injured in two consecutive road accidents on the Silchar-Imphal National Highway at Shibtila in Lakhipur, Cachar, late on Wednesday night (July 1). The second crash occurred while police were attending the scene of the first accident.
According to reports, the first accident took place at around 10 pm when a Bajaj Dominar motorcycle bearing registration number AS 11 V 0401 was travelling from Silchar at high speed. The motorcycle allegedly hit a pedestrian, identified as Abdul Halim, who was walking along the roadside.
Abdul Halim sustained serious injuries, while the rider, identified as Akash Singh, suffered minor injuries. Local residents rushed both to Emmanuel Rural Hospital. As Abdul Halim’s condition was critical, he was later referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.
After receiving information about the accident, Cachar Police reached the spot and began investigating while recovering the damaged motorcycle.
During the investigation, a black Mahindra Thar bearing registration number AS 01 FT 3987, reportedly travelling from the Silchar side at high speed, allegedly rammed into the accident site. The vehicle struck Lakhipur Police Sub-Inspector Deepak Kumar Chauhan, along with pedestrians Enam Uddin, Abdul Kasem and others present at the scene, before attempting to flee.
Sub-Inspector Deepak Kumar Chauhan, Enam Uddin and Abdul Kasem sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. Sources said the condition of Abdul Kasem and Enam Uddin is critical.
According to eyewitnesses, members of the public chased the Thar and managed to stop it a short distance from the accident site. They detained the driver, identified as Suraj Sinha from Manipur, and later handed him over to the police. Reports also claimed that the driver was assaulted by some members of the public before being taken into police custody.
