Flood Alert: All Educational Institutions Closed in Cachar on August 5, DDMA Issues Advisory

In response to the incessant rainfall across Silchar and various parts of Cachar District over the past 24 hours, the District Administration Cachar has issued an important directive, prioritising the safety and well-being of students and residents. Several areas within the district are experiencing waterlogging and reports of road blockages continue to emerge, raising serious concerns about the safe movement of schoolchildren and the general public.

Invoking powers under Section 34(M) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the District Administration has decided that all Government and Private educational institutions, including Colleges, Universities, ITIs, Training Centres, and Anganwadi Centres across Cachar District will remain closed on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.

This measure aims to restrict unnecessary movement and prevent potential hazards during this period of adverse weather. Heads of all institutions have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the order. However, it has been clearly stated that pre-scheduled examinations will be conducted as per the existing schedule without any change.

In a parallel advisory issued under the Office of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the public has been urged to remain alert and exercise caution. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting continued rainfall and the Barak River showing a steady rise in water levels, there is a heightened risk of flood-like situations, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone pockets of Silchar city.

The DDMA, Cachar, has advised all residents to avoid unnecessary movement in waterlogged areas, keep electrical appliances turned off, store valuables in elevated places, and keep emergency supplies such as dry food, drinking water, essential medicines, and communication devices ready. Citizens are strongly advised not to attempt driving or walking through flooded streets to avoid accidents or getting stranded. Residents are also urged to stay connected with official sources of information such as the District Administration, DDMA, and Silchar Municipal Corporation and to refrain from spreading or acting upon unverified information.

All line departments have been instructed to remain on high alert and take proactive steps to mitigate risks. The District Administration is continuously monitoring the situation and remains committed to ensuring public safety and an effective response in case of any emergency.

For emergency support, citizens may contact the District Control Room: 03842-239249 / 03842-234005, Mobile Helpline: 94016-24141.Email: ddma-cachar@assam.gov.in

This advisory is issued in the interest of public safety and seeks the cooperation of every citizen to navigate through the current weather challenges responsibly.
