Govt School Teacher Turns Campaigner For Sonai Congress Candidate

In poll-bound Sonai, a teacher’s alleged involvement in campaign activities has raised eyebrows and questions over accountability. A government school teacher from Sonai LAC in Cachar has allegedly come under scrutiny for active involvement in election campaigning during the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct. Rajib Ahmed Mazumder, a Mathematics and Science teacher at Nutan Hailakandi High School in Kaptanpur, was seen on Saturday (March 28) at a canvassing event of Congress candidate Aminul Haque Laskar held at a hotel in Silchar.

According to eyewitnesses and locals, Mazumder was not merely present but allegedly played a key role in organising the programme and was seen working closely with the Congress candidate. Residents of Kaptanpur claimed that he has been politically active for years, earlier associated with Sushmita Dev during her tenure in Congress, and later shifting allegiance after her move to the AITMC. They further alleged that he would often attend political events in disguise, wearing masks and caps, but is now openly participating as pressure of polls mount.

When contacted, the school’s headmaster, Amir Uddin Barbhuiya, said, “He (Rajib Ahmed Mazumder) was present in school today. I am not aware of where he went after school.” On being asked about Mazumder’s alleged political involvement, he added, “I have been told by people about this, but I couldn’t find any proof of this activity, even when I tried, hence I didn’t report this to the higher authorities.”

Locals expressed strong resentment over the alleged conduct. One resident said, “Despite the Model Code of Conduct being in force, Rajib sir is actively involved in politics. He is helping organise meetings and rallies, and his videos are going viral. A teacher is the backbone of society and should remain miles away from politics.”

Another local alleged, “Even after being salaried by the government, how can he support and organise rallies for a political candidate? We urge the Election Commission to take exemplary action. He is not just participating but allegedly acting as a chief advisor to the candidate.”

Residents also claimed that complaints regarding his political activities had been submitted to the district administration multiple times over the past two to three years, including a letter addressed to Minister Kaushik Rai. However, they alleged that no action has been taken so far.

The incident has sparked serious questions over the conduct of government employees during elections and the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct in the district.
