Guwahati Box-Bed Torture Case: Prime Accused Arrested From Udharbond
The prime accused in the riddling Guwahati case involving the hiding of a minor domestic worker inside a box-bed was arrested from Udharbond in Cachar district on February 5 (Thursday). The incident occurred on February 1 in the Panjabari area of Guwahati, where the accused, the wife of a Guwahati-based engineer, is charged with allegedly subjecting the minor domestic help to prolonged inhuman torture and confining her for over 25 minutes inside a box-bed in cramped conditions.
Dispur Police took custody of the accused and have also arrested her son from Guwahati, in the same connection. Amrin Akhtar was apprehended from her parental home in Udharbond by Cachar Police and later handed over to the Guwahati team.
According to investigators, the minor girl was allegedly abused and confined inside a bed-box storage compartment for over 25 minutes when a raid was conducted at the Panjabari residence. The rescue operation was carried out on February 1 by the District Labour Task Force in the presence of a magistrate, following complaints from locals.
During the investigation, police found that the child had been taken away by Amrin at the age of five, allegedly under the promise of raising her as her own. However, over the next seven years, the girl was reportedly cut off from her family. The victim’s relatives, who are residents of Cachar, alleged that they were allowed to speak to the child only once over the phone in the last four years.
Family members further claimed that they travelled to Guwahati multiple times in search of the girl but were never taken to the house where she was allegedly confined. They said the child was initially entrusted to Amrin due to the illness of her mother.
Police said further investigation is underway, and legal action has been initiated against the accused under relevant provisions of law.
