Hailakandi: 15-Year-Old Girl Found Dead, Locals Block National Highway Demanding Justice
A 15-year-old class 10 student was found dead under gruesome circumstances inside her home at Alaichara Part IV, near National Highway 6 under the Katlicherra police outpost in Hailakandi district.
The incident occurred late Saturday night (August 1) at around 11:30 PM when the victim, was alone at home. Locals suspect that she was subjected to sexual assault before being murdered.
In the wake of the tragedy, angry locals took to the streets and blocked the Assam-Mizoram connecting National Highway 6. The blockade brought hundreds of vehicles to a standstill for hours as protesters demanded strict punishment for the culprits.
Police forces rushed to the spot to control the situation and launched an investigation with the help of a forensic team. According to local reports, authorities have detained five suspects in connection with the crime.
Addressing the media, a local resident stated that an incident of this magnitude had never occurred in their area before. He urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the state government to set up a Fast Track court to ensure speedy justice, demanded that the accused be hanged, and called for a compensation of 10 Lakh Rupees for the grieving family. Some residents even voiced anger, demanding police action including encounters.
Hailakandi MLA Dr Milon Das visited the protest site and spoke with the locals to pacify the crowd.
Addressing the public, Das said, “You may demand an encounter, but the accused needs to be confirmed first before punishment. All the accused who were taken into custody must undergo necessary tests. If we delay this, she will never get her justice.”
The MLA appealed to the residents to allow the authorities to take the body for post-mortem examinations and assured the victim’s family that he would stand by them until justice is served.
Police investigations are ongoing as forensic experts gather evidence from the crime scene.
