Hailakandi District Admin Evicts Land Occupied by Ex-MLA Nizam Uddin

1. The Hailakandi district administration on Monday, September 21, carried out eviction drive at Dhaleswar Point in the Panchgram area, removing a gate and fencing allegedly constructed on government land by former MLA Nizam Uddin Choudhury.

A bulldozer was used during the operation to demolish the structures at the site. The action came two days after an operation on Saturday, September 19, when Hailakandi MLA Milon Das, along with senior district administration officials, the concerned Circle Officer and police personnel, intervened over the alleged occupation of the government land.

The land is reportedly government khas land and had allegedly remained under the possession of the former MLA for several years. A cattle market was also reportedly operated at the location in the past. The market was later stopped following administrative intervention over its operation on government land, although the area was allegedly not completely cleared.

During Saturday’s operation, Dr Milon Das had asked Nizam Uddin Choudhury to produce documents establishing any legal right over the property. The MLA had stated that any valid legal claim would be recognised, but government land could not be occupied without lawful authority.

Following Saturday’s intervention, the administration began the process of clearing the alleged encroachment. On Monday, the gate and fencing at the site were removed as part of the latest action.

The development has drawn attention in Dhaleswar Point, with the issue of alleged encroachment and the use of government land becoming a local talking point.

Addressing the media at the site on Monday, a person speaking about the matter said that it would be “nothing more shameful” if someone in a position of authority misused their power to take government land. The speaker also referred to the cattle market that had previously operated at the location.

The administration’s action is also linked to families affected by the Bharatmala road project. Several families reportedly lost their homes because of road construction, and temporary accommodation was arranged for some of the affected families at the site while the government land was being cleared.
