Hailakandi Minor Murder Case: Three Arrested as Police Probe Continues

Police have arrested three people in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl in Hailakandi district, nearly three days after the crime shocked the state.

The incident took place on the night of 1 August at Alaicherra Part IV under Katlicherra Police Station. A case has been registered as Katlicherra Police Station Case No. 83/2026 under Sections 65(1) and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The arrested accused have been identified as Apu Malakar, 18, Joydeep Ree, 19, and a 16-year-old juvenile, whose identity has not been disclosed in accordance with legal provisions protecting minors.

Police said a Special Investigation Team has been formed to investigate the case. The team, assisted by forensic experts, has collected crucial evidence from the crime scene. Officials said the investigation is continuing.

The case drew widespread public outrage after the Class 10 student was found dead inside her home at Alaicherra Part IV, near National Highway 6, on the night of 1 August. Investigators have alleged that the victim was sexually assaulted before being murdered.

Following the incident, angry residents blocked National Highway 6, which connects Assam and Mizoram, demanding swift justice. The protest caused long traffic disruptions as demonstrators called for strict punishment for those responsible, the establishment of a fast-track court and financial assistance for the victim’s family.

Hailakandi MLA Dr Milon Das visited the protest site and appealed for calm. He urged residents to allow investigators to complete the legal process, saying that those responsible must first be identified through a proper investigation before facing punishment. He also assured the victim’s family of his support until justice is delivered.

Police have not announced whether any further arrests are expected. The investigation remains ongoing.
