Hailakandi: MLA Milon Das Challenges Former MLA Nizam Uddin Over Government Land, Asks to Show Papers

Hailakandi MLA Dr Milon Das, accompanied by senior district administration officials, the concerned Circle Officer and police personnel, on Saturday (September 19) led an operation to clear government land allegedly under the possession of former MLA Nizam Uddin Choudhury at Dhaleswar Point in the Panchgram area.

The action was taken following allegations that the government land had remained under the former MLA’s possession for a prolonged period. During the operation, Dr Milon Das directly spoke with Nizam Uddin Choudhury and asked him to produce any valid documents establishing his legal right over the land.

Dr Milon Das made it clear that if the former MLA has valid legal rights over the property, those rights would be recognised. However, if the land is government khas land and has been encroached upon without any lawful authority, it cannot be retained.

The operation was carried out in the presence of senior officials from the district administration, the concerned Circle Office and the police. The administration subsequently began the process of removing the alleged encroachment and clearing the government land.

According to information available locally, the land at Dhaleswar Point had allegedly remained under the possession of Nizam Uddin Choudhury for several years. A cattle market was also reportedly operated there in his name in the past.

The cattle market was subsequently stopped following administrative intervention over its operation on government land. However, despite the closure of the market, the entire area was allegedly not cleared of the former MLA’s possession.

Vehicles belonging to Nizam Uddin Choudhury, along with other materials, were reportedly being kept on the site even after the cattle market was closed. The continued use of the government land subsequently became a matter of concern, leading to Saturday’s action.

During his visit to the site, Dr Milon Das sought clarity over the legal status of the property. He asked the former MLA to place before the administration any documents that could establish ownership or any other lawful right over the land.

The MLA’s position was that possession of the land would be considered in accordance with the law. If valid documents establish a legal right over the property, the claim would have to be dealt with accordingly. However, government khas land cannot be occupied without lawful authority.

The operation also had another dimension linked to families affected by the Bharatmala road project. Several families were reportedly displaced from their homes because of the road construction.

Dr Milon Das arranged temporary accommodation for these affected families at the site. The temporary arrangement was made to provide shelter to families who had lost their homes due to the road project while the government land was being cleared.

With the administration and police present during the operation, the action at Dhaleswar Point has drawn attention in Panchgram, particularly over the issue of alleged encroachment on government land and the temporary rehabilitation of families affected by the Bharatmala project.
