Hailakandi Police Arrest 60-Year-Old For Rape, Impregnating Minor

Hailakandi Police have arrested a 60-year-old man from Lala for the alleged rape of a minor. Samiran Nath, a 60-year-old man, the neighbour of the victim, had allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl from a village under the Lala Police Station in Hailakandi. He was produced before the court on Thursday (November 21) in Hailakandi, where he was remanded to two days of police custody.

The horrific incident happened 2 months back, when the 16-year-old victim was alone at home, and the neighbour, Samiran Nath, committed the heinous act. The 16-year-old girl, who has no parents, lives with her grandmother. On the day of the incident, the grandmother had gone out for work, leaving the girl at home. At this opportunity, the 60-year-old man entered their home and allegedly assaulted the minor.

When the victim’s health recently deteriorated, the grandmother came to know about the heinous crime, and she lodged a complaint at the Lala Police Station. A police team recorded the victim’s statement and took her for medical examination. During the medical examination, she was found to be pregnant.

Lala Police lodged a case under the POCSO Act and arrested the accused Samiran Nath. He was produced before the court on Thursday, and the court remanded the accused to two days of police custody for further investigation. Hailakandi Police is currently probing whether other persons were also involved in this crime.

The minor victim will be produced before the District Chief Welfare Committee on Friday, which will decide on the steps to be taken for the minor’s health.
