Kanad Purkayastha Lauds SMCH Doctors For ‘First-Class Care’ During Father Kabindra Purkayastha’s Treatment

Following the demise of Bharatiya Janata Party’s founding leader Kabindra Purkayastha, his son and Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha expressed heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and medical staff of Silchar Medical College and Hospital for their efforts during his father’s treatment. Purkayastha was on ventilation support for several days before his unfortunate demise on Wednesday (January 7) at the age of 94.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday evening, Kanad Purkayastha thanked the entire medical team led by Dr Abhijit Swami, including senior and junior doctors, medical students, nursing staff and paramedics, for standing by the family through what he described as “16 long and trying days” of treatment.

Speaking from SMCH, Kanad Purkayastha said, “Last year, when I brought my father to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for the first time, he received treatment, fought his ailments, and returned home healthy. On December 23, when he developed a fever and shortness of breath, he was again admitted to the medical college and shifted to the ICU. Dr Abhijit Swami and his team made their best efforts for two to three days, but his condition gradually deteriorated, following which he was put on ventilatory support. While on ventilation, he remained responsive initially, but over the past two to three days, his condition worsened, and he stopped responding to medication. Last night, his blood pressure dropped, and the functioning of other vital organs also began to fail. Today, at 5:05 PM, he was declared dead.”

He further said, “Silchar Medical College provided first-class treatment, which I would probably not have received at any hospital outside. Heads of various departments personally came forward to take care of him, and I have absolutely no complaints in that regard. The reality is that when a person grows old, one cannot expect the same response to medication”.

“He was a fighter and battled his ailments for a long time. Throughout his life, he remained a fighter, but in the end, one has to accept fate. He is no longer with us, but during his lifetime, he received the blessings and best wishes of countless people—perhaps that is why he lived among us for so long”, he also said.

He also informed that his body will be kept at SMCH’s morgue tonight before taking his mortal remains home for the final rites.

“I express my profound gratitude to all the doctors of SMCH, led by Dr Abhijit Swami, along with other senior, junior doctors, medical students, nursing staff, paramedics and all concerned, who put in their best possible efforts to revive my father’s health,” he wrote. He added that despite “sincere and tireless efforts”, destiny prevailed and his father passed away at 5:05 pm.Kanad Purkayastha said he would remain “deeply thankful and indebted” to everyone who supported the family during the most painful hours, adding that their “commitment and humanity will always be remembered with respect and gratitude.”
