Meet Silchar GC College's Joyeeta Nath Purkayastha who secured AIR - 4 in IIT JAM
Joyeeta Nath Purkayastha, a final year student of Gurucharan College has cleared by far one of the toughest post-graduation entrance exams in India- IIT JAM, and not just that, with securing All India Rank 04 in that examination. The Joint Admission test for Masters (JAM) is a common admission test conducted every year for admission into Masters of Science (M.Sc) and other post-graduate science programs at the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs). This year’s examination was organised by IIT Roorkee on February 13 and the result was declared on March 17, 2022.
Joyeeta is a final year student of Gurucharan College, Silchar of the Department of Biotechnology and has cleared the IIT JAM examination this year. Her optional paper was Biotechnology and she scored 72.67 out of 100 in this examination. Her All India Rank is 04, about which she says was “very unexpected”.
Speaking further about her preparation, Joyeeta said, “I started preparing last year from June. As there was already lockdown and COVID restrictions, there were no offline classes so I had ample amount of time. That’s why I took the plunge to start preparing for IIT JAM. I enrolled myself in the Unacademy live classes platform and attended those classes religiously.”
Speaking about her daily duration of study, she said, “I didn’t take it too seriously, I gave only six hours per day for preparing and that included the live classes too. I listened to my mentors at Unacademy and that helped me prepare better. Also to me personally, this year’s question paper was easier compared to the previous years”. Joyeeta did her schooling at Silchar Collegiate School and thereafter she went to Ramanuj Gupta Senior Secondary School for Higher Secondary in the Science stream.
Her exceptional result has made everyone in her family, about which she expressed, “I was literally shocked to see Air 04, I wasn’t ready for this and I had no idea how to react. I was happy. During my preparation, my target was to score 65+ so that I could be within AIR 15-20. After my exams when I calculated my scores with the answer key, it came out to be 72.67 and I was totally satisfied because I knew I would get a decent rank with this number, but didn’t expect Rank 04. So definitely this was overwhelming”.
This year 7665 students attempted this examination with Biotechnology optional. Only two IITs offer post-graduate of M.Sc in Biotechnology and there are just 50 seats for that discipline. The cut-off mark for a general category student this year was 32.25. Joyeeta is a resident of Vivekananda Road, Silchar and her result has brought laurels not just to her family or college, but the entire valley. We congratulate her on her huge success in the examination.
