Newborn Sold in Silchar After Deceiving Mother: Middleman Held; Father, Stepmother Absconding
A newborn baby was allegedly sold for Rs. 40,000 after deceiving the biological mother in Silchar. Police have rescued the baby and arrested one person, while the child’s father and stepmother, suspected of having sold the child, remain on the run.
The arrested person has been identified as Amir Hussain, a resident of Madhurbond’s Khilogram in Silchar. Police sources said Amir works as a broker in various deals and allegedly acted as the middleman in selling the child.
The victim, Samirunnesa, originally hails from Biharidala under Ratabari Police Station of the Sribhumi district. Her husband, Gulzar Hussain Talukdar, also from Biharidala, had been living in a rented house at Madhurbond Khilogram for some days with his second wife, Samirunnesa. His first wife is Roshna Begum. It is suspected that with Amir’s help, Gulzar and Roshna sold Samirunnesa’s newborn son in exchange for money.
Samirunnesa told the police that she gave birth to a baby boy at Silchar Medical College Hospital on October 27. She was discharged along with the baby on November 3 and returned to the rented house in Khilogram. On November 7, her husband, Gulzar, his first wife, Roshna, and Amir came to the house. She did not know at the time that Amir was a broker. They told her that she would be going back home in Ratabari with her newborn child. With no suspicion, she happily agreed and left with them.
Samirunnesa further revealed that on November 7, Gulzar, Roshna and Amir took her to Silchar Ramnagar ISBT, saying they were taking her and the child to their home in Ratabari. After seating her inside a bus, the three stepped out with the baby and never returned. She searched for them but could not trace anyone, after which she realised her newborn had been taken away deceitfully.
According to sources, it is suspected that Gulzar and his first wife, Roshna — with Amir’s assistance — sold the newborn for Rs. 40,000 without the knowledge of the biological mother.
Following her FIR, police launched an investigation and arrested Amir on Wednesday (November 12). Based on his interrogation, police rescued the baby from a childless couple in Udharbond’s Durganagar. The couple, who were unaware of the fraud, were told that Roshna was the biological mother and that the child was being handed over willingly.
While Amir has been sent to judicial custody, the biological father, Gulzar and the stepmother, Roshna, are currently absconding. A search operation is underway to trace them. Police believe this may be part of a larger child-selling racket.
Meanwhile, the newborn has been reunited with the biological mother.
