Nigerian National Detained In Silchar; Parallel Mizoram Incidents Raise Security Concerns
A Nigerian national, allegedly an illegal entrant into India, was detained in Silchar along with four others, triggering fresh concerns over undocumented foreign movement through the Northeast.
According to police sources, the 44-year-old Nigerian man, identified as Esedo, was apprehended on Wednesday morning (March 25) from the Shillongpatty area. He was travelling in an auto-rickshaw along with a couple from the Ghaniwala locality, a woman from Mizoram, and a local auto driver, who is also a resident of Ghaniwala. The Mizoram woman is Malsawmi Dangi (46), a resident of Aizawl. The Ghaniwala couple are Tinku Hassan Barbhuiya (41) and his wife Romina Begum Barbhuiya (38).
All five were taken to the Sadar Police Station for questioning.
Police said the Nigerian national did not possess any valid documents for entry into India. Following their detention, senior police officials and intelligence agencies conducted multiple rounds of interrogation. While authorities have not officially disclosed details, sources indicated that the group is being questioned for suspected links to a larger network.
Preliminary inputs suggest that the Mizoram-based woman was known to the Ghaniwala couple and had allegedly brought the Nigerian national to their residence after he arrived from Delhi on Tuesday (March 24). However, investigators suspect that the claim may be misleading and that the individual could have entered India through the porous Myanmar border via Mizoram before reaching Silchar.
The incident gains significance amid a series of recent cases involving foreign nationals in Mizoram. On March 26, a 58-year-old Slovak national was detained near the Indo-Myanmar border in Siaha district of Mizoram while allegedly attempting to cross into Myanmar without valid travel documents. He was intercepted by Assam Rifles personnel at Laki village and is currently under interrogation.
Earlier, on March 13, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested six Ukrainian nationals and one American citizen from multiple airports across the country. The agency alleged that the group had entered Mizoram without obtaining the mandatory Protected Area Permit (PAP), crossed into Myanmar, and were involved in training ethnic armed groups in drone warfare, besides facilitating the movement of drone equipment into conflict zones. However, Mizoram Police have not independently confirmed these allegations.
While no direct link between the Silchar case and the Mizoram incidents has been officially established, security agencies are increasingly viewing these developments with concern. Mizoram shares a long and largely unfenced border with Myanmar, making it vulnerable to cross-border movement.
Importantly, Silchar’s location adds another layer to the concern. National Highway 54, the primary route connecting Mizoram to the rest of the country, passes through Cachar district. Despite alternative routes via Manipur and Tripura, this highway remains the most widely used corridor, making Cachar a critical transit point.
Whether the Nigerian detained in Silchar is related to the wider network is not yet known.
