NIT Silchar Slips to 50 in Engineering, 97 Overall in NIRF India Rankings 2025
The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar, has registered a dip in its performance in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2025, released by the Ministry of Education on Thursday (September 4).
In the Engineering category, NIT Silchar has been ranked 50th, falling 10 places from last year’s 40th position. In the Overall category, the institute secured 97th rank, down from 90th in 2024. The rankings were announced ceremoniously at the Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Reacting to the development, NIT Silchar Director Dilip Kumar Baidya said, “We slipped a little from previous year ranks, but this slip doesn’t mean we are doing anything wrong. Basically, new institutes are joining the ranking framework, and the number is increasing, which means tougher competition. Secondly, some older institutions, which usually ranked behind us, have outperformed us this year. But we are trying our best to maintain our ranking. Because of this slip, we are alert and will certainly work to improve.”
IIT Madras secured the first rank among engineering institutes, while IIT Guwahati from Assam made it to Rank 8.
The 10th edition of the NIRF rankings evaluated 7,692 institutions across 17 categories, including a newly introduced category on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 1,584 Engineering institutes participated in the NIRF this year. Institutions were assessed on five parameters—Teaching, Learning and Resources; Research and Professional Practice; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach and Inclusivity; and Perception.
Recognised as a Tier-1 engineering college and an Institute of National Importance, NIT Silchar continues to be a key centre of higher education in the valley despite the minor setback in rankings.
