No Government Funds, 6th A.P. Battalion Builds a New Main Gate After 61 Years: Minister Kaushik Rai

The 6th A.P. Battalion of Assam Police inaugurated its newly developed main gateway at its headquarters in Silchar at 4 pm on Friday, August 14, a day ahead of Independence Day.

The gateway was inaugurated by Kaushik Rai, Minister of Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Housing and Urban Affairs, and Cooperation. Rai, who represents Lakhipur, also serves as the Guardian Minister for Sribhumi and Hailakandi districts.

The inauguration was attended by Dr Pradip Saikia, APS, Commandant of the 6th A.P. Battalion, and Bijoy Singh, APS, Assistant Commandant, along with personnel of the battalion.

Speaking at the event, the Commandant said the battalion had remained without a proper main gate for a long time. He said the newly constructed gateway was an important part of the institution, which has a role in maintaining the security of the country.

He also expressed his gratitude to Rai for attending the inauguration.

Rai, referring to the history of the battalion, said it was established in 1965 and had completed more than six decades of service. He said the construction of a proper main gate after so many years was a significant development for the battalion.

Rai also appreciated the battalion for constructing the gateway without government funding. He said that while people often wait for government support for infrastructure development, the battalion had taken the initiative to build the gateway on its own.

Describing the new structure as beautiful, Rai said he believed the gateway would also strengthen the security of the battalion headquarters.

He also spoke about the road outside the battalion headquarters, which is used by civilians. Rai expressed hope that the relationship between civilians and the battalion would remain harmonious and requested that care be taken so that the movement of local residents and other commuters on the road does not face unnecessary difficulties.

The 6th A.P. Battalion was raised on February 24, 1965, through Government Notification No. HPL.700/64/57 dated February 2, 1965. Its temporary headquarters was initially established at Sanskrit Bhawan in Silchar.

The headquarters was later shifted to its present location in 1973. The battalion was made permanent through Government Notification No. HMA.1482/82/130 dated February 7, 1992.

The inauguration of the new gateway marks another infrastructure milestone for the battalion as it continues its long-standing role within Assam Police.
