Patient Retracts Genital Amputation Allegation Against Dr Eden Sinha, Calls It a “Misunderstanding”; Probe Continues

On July 1, Atikur Rahman, a 27-year-old resident of Jiribam in Manipur, filed a shocking FIR against a Silchar-based laparoscopic surgeon, alleging that the doctor amputated his genitals without consent during a botched surgery. The doctor in question, Dr Eden Sinha, a General and Laparoscopic Surgeon associated with Silchar Medical College and Hospital, had performed the procedure at RE Hospital, a private nursing home in the Ghungoor area of Silchar. The FIR accused Dr Sinha of carrying out the surgery without waiting for a biopsy report and without informing either Atikur or his wife about the severity or nature of the procedure.

A surprising 180-degree turn is now being seen in this case, after Atikur has distanced himself from the allegations and is now claiming it all happened due to a “misunderstanding”. Amidst all these, an allegation of a monetary transaction is surfacing.

Back then, Atikur held a press conference to detail his allegations, videos of which were received by Barak Bulletin on July 3. While the patient openly accused the surgeon, Dr Eden Sinha didn’t distance himself from the accusations. Despite repeated attempts since July 3, Barak Bulletin could not get through to Dr Sinha. On July 3 night, his assistant picked up the call to say that the doctor was in the operation theatre and would call back the next morning. He didn’t, and since then his number remains “switched off or not reachable at the moment”.

According to Atikur’s original account, his medical ordeal began on May 19 when he visited RE Hospital with what he thought was a minor infection — a spot on his urethra. Dr Sinha reportedly ordered a few tests which did not clearly diagnose the issue, and hence, recommended a biopsy the same evening. What followed, according to Atikur, was nothing short of traumatic. He alleged that under the pretext of a biopsy, the doctor amputated his genitals without his knowledge or consent. Atikur said he discovered this only three days later when the dressing was opened, and a catheter pipe was found inserted in place of his genitals.

Back then, Atikur mentioned that neither the doctor nor any of the hospital staff mentioned him or his wife, present at the hospital that day, about the procedure. “I was administered anaesthesia before the biopsy. I was told that a small flesh from the infected area would be cut for the test, and I would walk home the same evening. But the anaesthesia waned off; I was found to be admitted with my genitals covered in dressing. 3 days later, when my dressing was opened, I was shocked to see my genitals removed and a pipe was inserted instead, connected to a catheter. I was never told about this before. After they cut off my genitals, one of the hospital staff showed a picture to my wife, and she collapsed, looking at what they did to me. She was even admitted to the ICU as she collapsed”, Atikur had claimed back then after filing the FIR on July 1.

Now, in a shocking twist just fifteen days later, Atikur has taken a complete U-turn. In a video that surfaced online, he has retracted his allegations, saying it was all a “misunderstanding”. “After the treatment, sir (Dr Eden Sinha) told me there were serious ailments in my genitals and that they needed to be removed. I panicked when I saw it, and the people in my village told me it was wrong. But when I later went to the cancer hospital, the report confirmed cancer. Dr Sinha told me that if it wasn’t removed, I could have died. My body would have rotted,” Atikur says in the video.

In the same video, two unidentified individuals are heard questioning Atikur about whether he still holds any complaint against Dr Sinha. “No complaint,” Atikur responds. One of them even offers him words of encouragement and advises him to continue with his cancer treatment. The well-wishers didn’t reveal who they were.

This abrupt reversal has raised eyebrows across the region. How did a man who filed an FIR, addressed a press conference, and alleged medical malpractice now suddenly reverse his claims? This complete reversal of his earlier statement has created a cloud of mystery around the case. There are now allegations that a significant monetary transaction may have taken place and that the patient was managed by a broker network to suppress the truth. Sources claim that this network played a role in convincing the patient to go against his original accusations and give Dr Sinha a clean chit.

When Barak Bulletin reached out to Numal Mahatta, the Senior Superintendent of Cachar asking whether the case was withdrawn as complainant Atikur Rahman now claims that the doctor was not at fault, he said, “The matter is still under investigation and we are waiting for the report of the doctor’s panel that has been formed to investigate the medical procedure”. Mahatta also said that who said what doesn’t matter, and since FIR was lodged, police will perform their duty without any deterrence.

As of July 23, the matter still remains under investigation to find out if the surgery performed was correct and why there was a delay in sending the samples for biopsy. At the same time, Dr Eden Sinha has not yet distanced himself from the allegations against him, and he still remains unreachable.
