
Pothole Turns Deadly, Truck Overturns Near Gumra Bridge, Driver Seriously Injured
A truck driver was seriously injured after his vehicle lost control and plunged beneath the Gumra Bridge on National Highway 6 in Cachar district while attempting to avoid a large pothole on the road late on Thursday night (June 18).
According to reports, the truck was travelling from Meghalaya towards Silchar when the accident occurred near the Gumra Bridge. The driver reportedly tried to steer clear of a massive pothole on the highway but lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and fall into the riverbed below the bridge.
The injured driver sustained serious injuries and was rushed for medical treatment. He is currently undergoing treatment, sources said.
The stretch of National Highway 6 connecting Kalain and Malidor has remained in a severely damaged condition for a long time. Large potholes resembling ponds have formed at several locations, making travel dangerous for motorists.
Local residents alleged that road accidents have become a regular occurrence on this section of the highway due to its poor condition. They claimed that despite repeated incidents and public complaints, neither the administration nor the concerned department has taken effective steps to repair the road.
Residents and commuters have expressed frustration over the deteriorating condition of the highway, stating that they continue to face immense hardship and safety risks while travelling on the route.
