Rina Begum Confesses To Killing Husband Imran Hussain, Sent To Judicial Custody

In a major breakthrough in the sensational murder case of Rajnagar-Kulicherra Gaon Panchayat President Imran Hussain Barbhuiya, Cachar Police on Wednesday (August 27) produced his wife Rina Begum and former driver Biju Ahmed Laskar before the court after three days in police remand. The court has sent both the accused to judicial custody.

During interrogation in police custody, Biju Ahmed had reportedly confessed to conspiring in the murder earlier. Rina, however, initially denied the allegations. When questioned outside the district court on August 23, she had maintained that she did not kill her husband. But in a dramatic turn of events, sources confirmed that during the latest remand period, Rina confessed to murdering Imran with sleeping pills.

On Tuesday night (August 26), the police investigating team visited Imran’s residence in Dholai for a thorough crime scene inspection. From there, they recovered a pill strip from a dustbin, which indicated that six tablets had been consumed. The forensic team collected the sample for lab testing to determine the composition of the pills. They also seized utensils used for cooking and serving food to send them for forensic examination.

On Wednesday, when Rina and Biju were produced in court, more than 100 people had gathered in the compound, anxiously following the developments of the high-profile case. The court remanded both to judicial custody, while police continued their investigation to build a watertight case.

For those uninitiated, Imran Hussain Barbhuiya, who had been elected as GP President merely months before his death, passed away on August 10. Initially, his demise was believed to be the result of a sudden heart attack. However, suspicion among family members and close friends prompted further inquiry. Incriminating WhatsApp chats later surfaced between Rina Begum and Biju Ahmed, pointing towards a planned conspiracy.
According to police sources, the chats revealed that Rina allegedly murdered her husband by mixing sleeping pills in his dinner. The pills were allegedly supplied to her by Biju Ahmed. Acting on this evidence, Cachar Police arrested both Rina and Biju on August 21. Four more individuals were also arrested in connection with the case. The following day, Imran’s body was exhumed for an autopsy before being reburied after a sombre prayer service.

The case has shocked the Dholai area, with locals expressing disbelief over the tragic turn of events. Imran Hussain, who had recently assumed charge as GP President, was regarded as an emerging grassroots leader in the region. Locals have also submitted a memorandum to the Dholai Co-District Commissioner, urging the accused to be tried in the Fast-Track Court.
