Self Enumeration for Census 2027 Begins in Assam, Here’s How You Can Submit Your Details Online

Citizens in Assam can now submit their household details online as part of the Self Enumeration process for Census 2027. The facility, which began on 2 August, will remain open until 16 August through the official portal, se.census.gov.in, allowing families to complete the first stage of the Census before enumerators begin door-to-door visits.

The Directorate of Census Operations, Assam, said the online facility has been introduced to make the Census process more convenient, flexible and citizen friendly. After the Self Enumeration window closes, trained census enumerators will carry out the Houselisting Operation and Housing Census across the state from 17 August to 15 September 2026.

What is Self Enumeration?

Self Enumeration is a digital facility that allows citizens to securely provide their household and housing information online instead of waiting for an enumerator to collect the details. The information submitted by citizens is protected under the Census Act, 1948, which provides legal safeguards for confidentiality.

The portal is available in English, Hindi and several regional languages, making it easier for people across the country to participate.

How to Complete Self Enumeration

To begin, visit the official Self Enumeration portal at se.census.gov.in.

Users must first register by entering the name of the Head of the Household and a primary mobile number. An email address may also be provided to receive confirmation. The name of the Head of the Household cannot be changed after registration.

After registration, users must select their preferred language and verify their mobile number using the One Time Password (OTP) sent to their phone.

They will then be asked to enter their residential details, including the state, district, PIN code and village, town or locality. Residents should also identify their house by placing a marker on the digital map so that it can be linked to the correct Houselisting Block.

The next step is to complete the Houselisting and Housing Census questionnaire. The process generally takes around 15 to 20 minutes. The portal includes notes, tooltips and frequently asked questions to help users while filling in the information.

Before submitting, users can review all the details they have entered. They may save the information as a draft or complete the process by selecting Final Submit.

Once the form is successfully submitted, the system generates a unique Self Enumeration ID, usually an 11 digit number beginning with the letter “H”. The ID is sent through SMS or email.

What Happens After Submission?

Submitting information online does not complete the entire Census process. Between 17 August and 15 September, census enumerators will visit households to verify or confirm the information.

Residents who have completed Self Enumeration should provide their Self Enumeration ID to the enumerator. The ID will be matched through the official Census application, allowing the information to be verified quickly. If the ID is unavailable or does not match, the enumerator will collect the household details during the visit.

Flood-hit Districts

The Directorate of Census Operations, Assam, has also suspended Census training programmes and other preparatory activities in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts until further orders because of the prevailing flood situation.

The authorities have appealed to people across Assam to make use of the Self Enumeration facility before 16 August and participate in the Census process.
