Silchar Faces Severe Waterlogging as Rain Disrupts Daily Life
Continuous rainfall since yesterday has led to severe waterlogging across Silchar, triggering what residents describe as an artificial flood and disrupting normal life in the town.
Several areas including Bilpar, Radhamadhab Road, New Market and Padmanagar are submerged, with water entering homes and damaging furniture and essential belongings. Roads in many parts of the town have been inundated, severely affecting movement and bringing transport to a near halt.
Residents say the situation has forced many families to temporarily leave their homes. A local from Bilpar alleged that no preventive measures were taken during the dry season to tackle such flooding. He claimed the water is likely to remain stagnant for at least two days, prolonging the hardship.
Educational institutions and offices have been affected as students and employees struggle to commute. Business activities have also taken a hit, with shops in low-lying areas reporting losses due to water entering their premises. Fhatak Bazaar remains one of the worst affected commercial zones.
Locals have blamed poor drainage infrastructure for the crisis. According to residents, drains have not been cleaned for a long time and are clogged with plastic and waste, preventing proper water flow. They alleged administrative negligence has worsened the situation.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has forecast more rainfall in the next 24 hours, raising concerns that the situation may deteriorate further if the rain continues.
