
Silchar Journalist Assaulted After Report on Alleged Land Mafia
A Silchar-based journalist was allegedly attacked with sharp weapons and sticks on Sunday evening (February 22) after publishing reports against an alleged land mafia figure near the National Highway Outpost. Police have registered a case and detained one suspect in connection with the assault.
Speaking to the media, journalist Surajit Chakraborty said he was returning from his in-laws’ house in Srikona when the incident occurred around 7 PM. He alleged that Aurobindo Das, whom he described as a land mafia, called him to a nearby market and threatened him for publishing news reports about his family. Chakraborty claimed that Das demanded Rs 50,000 and abused both him and a police officer.
Chakraborty said that as he tried to leave the area, Das’s nephew and several others attacked him with sharp objects and sticks. He managed to reach near the Chengkuri Police Outpost, but the attackers allegedly dragged him away again and continued beating him before police intervened and rescued him. He sustained serious injuries in the assault.
Police from the National Highway Outpost brought Chakraborty to the station, where he filed a complaint against Das and several others. Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police, Partha Protim Das, said one person involved in the incident has been detained, and further investigation is underway.
Chakraborty said he reports on verified facts as part of his professional duty and questioned why he was targeted for reporting on alleged illegal land activities. He also thanked personnel of the outpost for saving him from what he described as a life-threatening attack.
