Silchar Municipal Corporation Warns Banquet Halls of Heavy Fines for Garbage Violations

The Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has issued a strict advisory to banquet halls, hotels, restaurants, godowns and other bulk waste generators, warning them against disposing of garbage in open areas during the ongoing festive and wedding season.

According to the SMC, several establishments have recently been found dumping waste on roadsides, drains and public spaces, causing serious threats to cleanliness, sanitation and public health. The Corporation has said that any violation of waste management rules will attract heavy penalties under the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022. Fines may go up to Rs. 1,00,000, and legal action may also be taken against offenders.

Officials said all commercial establishments must contact SMC for timely and scientific waste collection. Services will be provided as per municipal norms, along with applicable user fees. The Enforcement Team of SMC is authorised to carry out inspections at any time, and any failure to comply will result in immediate punitive measures.

SMC has urged banquet halls, event organisers and all bulk waste generators to act responsibly and support the city’s efforts to maintain hygiene during the festive period. For waste collection and compliance support, establishments may contact Municipal Inspector Panna Lal Deb at 9101293214, or City Project Officer (SBM-U) Rajiv Chanda at 6002568070.

The Corporation reaffirmed its commitment to building a “Swachh Sundor Silchar” and sought full cooperation from all stakeholders. The information was shared through a press release issued by the Regional Office of Information & Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone, Silchar, Assam.

Silchar has long struggled with rising waste accumulation, made worse by widespread lack of civic sense among residents and commercial operators. Public spaces often turn into dumping spots, creating eyesores and health hazards across the town. While strict measures like the latest SMC advisory may help reduce the growing piles of garbage, more sustained effort is needed, from both authorities and citizens, to keep Silchar clean and maintain a healthier urban environment.
