Silchar Poll Buzz: Rajdeep Roy Expects Record Voting

Dr. Rajdeep Roy, the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from Silchar, cast his vote on Thursday and expressed optimism about a high voter turnout in the ongoing Assam State Assembly Election 2026.

Speaking to reporters after voting at Radhamadhab Balika Vidyalaya, Roy described election day as a “festival of democracy” and said he expects turnout to reach around 80 per cent this time.

He said people have faith in the leadership of Narendra Modi and are voting to reaffirm the development carried out in Assam and the Barak Valley. He added that in his assembly constituency, the voting percentage could range between 80 and 84 per cent.

Roy also highlighted the importance of voting in his personal life, stating that his family treats elections like a festival. He said that irrespective of whether a family member is contesting, they come together to cast their votes. According to him, around eight to ten members of his family voted on Thursday.

The BJP candidate further assured that he would remain available for the people of his constituency at all times.

His candidature has also been seen as a challenging one. Soon after his name was announced, social media platforms were flooded with reactions from netizens, many of which reflected anti-incumbency sentiments, despite the fact that he is not the sitting MLA. Rajdeep Roy had earlier served as the Member of Parliament from Silchar between 2019 and 2024, and is now contesting the assembly election as an MLA candidate.

Polling is underway across Assam on Thursday as voters turn out to elect their representatives in the 2026 state assembly elections. Authorities have put in place necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth and peaceful voting process.
