Silchar Retired Teacher Under Police Probe For Insensitive Social Media Remark On Delhi Blast

A retired school teacher from Silchar was apprehended by Cachar Police on Tuesday (November 11) for allegedly making an insensitive and politically charged remark on social media about the recent Delhi blast.

The individual, identified as Nazrul Islam Barbhuiya of Durgapur, Rongpur under Silchar Sadar Police Station, had commented “Election is coming ahead” on a news post related to the blast, allegedly attempting to give a political angle to a matter linked to national security. Barbhuiya is a retired teacher of Banskandi NMHS School in Cachar.

He was brought to the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police, Cachar, for questioning. Speaking on the matter, Additional SP of Cachar Rajat Kumar Pal said on Tuesday, “At a time when different agencies are investigating the Delhi blast and news is spreading, some people are trying to use this for their vested interests and are attempting to politicise it. This might draw a communal turn and create divisions between communities.”

He added that the district’s social media monitoring cell flagged Barbhuiya’s activity. “We received information that a resident of Silchar, Nazrul Islam Barbhuiya, commented from his social media page and tried to give a political angle to the news. We have apprehended him and are interrogating him to determine what his motive was—whether there was an attempt to divide the community.”

Police said Barbhuiya has admitted to commenting on his own. Further interrogation and investigation are underway.
