Silchar Walkathon Highlights Civic Duty: ‘Cleanliness Is Our Moral Responsibility’

A two-kilometre walkathon held in Silchar on Sunday morning drew over 150 enthusiastic participants, spreading the message of cleanliness and community responsibility. The event, organised by the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) in collaboration with Srishti Waste Management, began at Rangirkhari Point and concluded at Goldighi Mall, Premtola.

Leading the walkathon, SMC Commissioner Srishti Singh, IAS, said the initiative aimed to remind residents that keeping the city clean is everyone’s duty. “Today we arranged a walkathon from Rangirkhari to Goldighi Mall, where our staff members, SHG members and other public members took part. Our motive is to spread the message that cleanliness is our duty and moral responsibility. We must work together to keep our city clean,” Singh said. She added that the corporation would continue organising such mass-mobilising initiatives to encourage public participation.

The Commissioner also praised residents of Ward No. 17, particularly the senior citizens, who have started their own community drive to clean their neighbourhood every Sunday. “Their effort sends a strong message, inspiring the youth to take part in building a cleaner Silchar through community participation,” Singh remarked.

Silchar, like many growing towns, faces challenges in maintaining cleanliness. Several corners, bylanes and even main roads often witness open littering, leading to foul smells and an unpleasant environment. Events such as this walkathon highlight that maintaining cleanliness is not just the responsibility of civic authorities but of every citizen. Developing a sense of civic duty and keeping one’s surroundings clean can go a long way in making Silchar a healthier and more beautiful city to live in.
