“Sonai is with Congress” says Aminul Laskar after bike rally

Congress candidate Aminul Haque Laskar on Sunday (April 5) claimed strong public support in the Sonai constituency after a large bike rally organised by party workers and supporters. Addressing the media during the campaign, he expressed confidence of a decisive victory and sharply criticised the ruling government.

The rally passed through several areas of Sonai, including Berenga, Bhagadahar and Borjurai, where hundreds of motorcycles joined the procession. Supporters gathered in significant numbers, while local residents were seen watching the rally with interest as it moved across the constituency.

Speaking to media, Laskar said the turnout reflected growing support for Congress. He claimed that many young people from Silchar municipal wards 25 and 26 took part in the rally, which he said indicated a shift in public mood. He added that voters in Sonai are seeking change and asserted that Congress would win the seat with a large margin.

Laskar also criticised the BJP-led government, describing it as authoritarian. He expressed confidence that Gaurav Gogoi would become the next Chief Minister if Congress forms the government. He further said that the April 9 polling would favour Congress and predicted that the results on May 4 would confirm the party’s victory.

In his remarks, Laskar defended senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, calling him a key campaigner and criticising attempts to ridicule opposition leaders. He maintained that all Congress leaders are playing important roles in the campaign.

The Sonai seat is witnessing a triangular political narrative. The BJP has not fielded a candidate and is supporting its ally Karim Uddin Barbhuiya of the Asom Gana Parishad. Barbhuiya, a former MLA from the All India United Democratic Front, joined AGP in March ahead of the elections. He has stated that the Muslim community should remain politically connected with those in power when he announced his shift.

With the election scheduled in a single phase on April 9, campaigning has intensified across the constituency. Security arrangements have been tightened, with police conducting vehicle checks and monitoring public movement. Authorities have also announced a dry day from April 7 to April 9 to ensure peaceful polling. Counting of votes will take place on May 4.
