Sushmita Dev Slams ‘God Complex’ of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

In a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, MP Sushmita Dev has accused him of being arrogant and inaccessible, saying that his “god-like” attitude will lead to the BJP’s downfall in the 2026 Assembly elections.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday (July 6), Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev claimed that in the history of Assam, there has never been a Chief Minister as arrogant as Dr Sarma. “If Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma thinks he is God, he is mistaken. He is merely a public representative whose power may not last forever,” she said. She also questioned the land acquisition for the Dolu Airport and warned that the people of Silchar might also face similar instances when the flyover is built.

Dev said that during past natural disasters like floods, even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh conducted aerial surveys. “Narendra Modi also visited up to 2017, but now, despite major floods affecting not just Assam but also Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal, and Sikkim, the PM has not visited,” she said. “Still, when I wrote to him, I at least received an acknowledgement from the PM’s office. I am in the opposition and naturally I criticised him, but they had the courtesy to reply. That’s the minimum decorum.”

In contrast, she alleged that her multiple letters to Assam’s Chief Minister went unanswered. “I have tweeted about this too. Maybe he will say the email address was wrong or give some other excuse. But in Assam’s political history, no Chief Minister has shown this level of ego,” she said. “From now on, I will address all my concerns directly to Union Ministers and the Prime Minister’s Office, keeping the CM in copy.”

The MP from West Bengal also alleged that both the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary of Assam fail to follow protocol when dealing with Members of Parliament. “Even if I’m not an MP from Assam, there is a protocol to be followed. Even if a. MP from Bihar or any other state writes to the Assam CM or any government officer, they should get a basic response, but there is no such decorum,” she remarked.

Speaking specifically on the Dolu Tea Estate land acquisition, Dev said she wrote five to six letters to the Chief Secretary of Assam seeking clarity on compensation and legal procedure, but received no response. “No one knows how the land was acquired or how much compensation was paid. What happened in Dolu can happen in Silchar too, when land is acquired for the upcoming flyover. Sushmita Dev will speak up even then,” she warned.

Dev made it clear that she is not against development. “We are not saying that the airport or flyover should not be built. But the laws of the country must be followed. Speaking about laws does not mean one is anti-development,” she said.

In conclusion, the MP held firm that CM Sarma’s arrogance will cost the BJP dearly. “For his ego, he will lose the 2026 elections,” she declared.
