Suspected Rohingya Couple With Five Minors Detained in Katigorah’s Hilara
In yet another incident raising infiltration concerns, a couple along with five minor children were held by locals and Village Defence Party (VDP) members in Hilara under Katigorah constituency of Cachar on suspicion of being Rohingyas.
The group had reportedly reserved an autorickshaw on Saturday (June 21) afternoon from Hilara Railway Station and was heading towards Kalain when their conversation and movements aroused suspicion.
When locals asked them about their whereabouts, they found inconsistencies in their statements and behaviour. After intercepting their vehicle, the locals alerted the Katigorah Police.
Katigorah Police soon reached the spot and took the couple and the five minors into custody. They were promptly taken to Silchar Sadar for further interrogation. The autorickshaw used by the group, bearing registration number AS 10/BC/0339, was also seized.
When questioned, the man claimed he was a resident of Delhi and had come to the Katigorah area after a dispute with his father, following which he left home along with his wife. However, the group failed to provide clear answers about their destination or purpose of travel.
The frequent detention of suspected Rohingya individuals in Cachar is raising troubling questions about the possible existence of a local network aiding their movement. Authorities are yet to confirm their nationality, and further investigation is underway.
