Tension in Hailakandi over lynching of a boy; Police fires tear-gas, many injured
Situation in Hailakandi has become very tense. Locals have alleged that the officials in Hailakandi Fire Brigade have lynched a boy to death. As per a local resident, who identified himself as a lawyer, Chanpur resident Rahim Uddin Laskar was lynched to death inside the Fire and Emergency services station in Hailakandi.
After a mobile phone was stolen from the Fire station, the officers through their own investigation alleged that Rahim Uddin Laskar stole it. “They picked him from his house last night and then they started beating him mercilessly. They kicked him and then started putting salt on his wounds. He kept screaming but the group of people did not allow him any respite. Then a senior official walked in and stopped the officials,” said a man who claims to be an eyewitness to the entire incident.
Rahim Uddin Laskar was immediately rushed to the Civil hospital but his condition was deemed to be critical. The doctors in Hailakandi referred him to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. As per the advocate, Rahim Uddin Laskar died of the injuries. “I demand a judicial enquiry of the matter and at the same time request the state government to compensate the family of the boy who has been mercilessly lynched,” said the advocate.
He added, “We have information that gambling, intoxication and antisocial activities go on inside the fire station. I urge the district administration to probe the matter.”
The news of this lynching started spreading across Hailakandi. Locals gathered in front of the Fire Brigade office and started protesting. Many even went on to attack the officials in Fire station. To bring the situation under control, police officials rushed to the spot.
Speaking with the media, Hailakandi Circle Officer, Tridib Roy said that many police officials including the Additional SP have got injured as the locals started pelting stone. “There is a law and order situation in Hailakandi. The Police had managed to bring it under control but tension erupted again. Strict actions will be taken against those who are breaking the rule. We will also take action against miscreants involved in rumour mongering,” asserted the circle officer.
When he was asked about the boy and where he is, the Circle Officer could not respond. “I will check and let you know,” he said.
Our correspondent on the ground says that the locals have started pelting stones once again and the Police had to fire several rounds of tear-gas in order to bring the situation under control. Many individuals on both sides have incurred fresh injuries, he reported. As per the latest information, the prime accused of the lynching case- Jyotishman Hazarika has been detained.
