Traffic Restrictions Announced in Silchar for Durga Puja Festivities: No Entry Points, Vehicle Route

In view of Durga Puja, the biggest festival in Silchar, the Silchar Traffic Police have announced an elaborate traffic regulation plan to ensure smooth vehicular movement and public safety. The restrictions will be effective from September 28 to October 2, 2025, with specific guidelines for immersion day on October 2.

According to the notification, from September 28 till October 2, starting 9 AM and until further notice, all types of heavy and medium trucks will not be allowed to ply within the town. Similarly, all categories of buses — heavy, medium, small passenger buses, light commercial passenger vehicles, including those belonging to the Army, Paramilitary, BRTF, and CRPF — will also be restricted inside municipal areas from 9 AM onwards.

From September 28, inter-state and private passenger buses will operate from designated points. Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram state buses, along with private super buses, will run from Ramnagar, Nagatilla, Rongpur, and Raigarh after 9 AM. Commercial vehicles on the Sribhumi and Hailakandi routes will operate from Ramnagar, while those on Lakhimpur, Udharbond, and Manipur routes will use the Ramakrishna Petrol Pump. Vehicles on the Sonai and Mizoram routes will start from Jangian Point, those on the Masimpur route from Tarapur Raigarh, and vehicles on the Dwarbond route from Kathal Point.

Within the municipal area, rickshaws and auto-rickshaws must remain stationed at temporary stands outside the town limits. Vehicles coming from Malugram and Trunk Road side will move via Sadarghat Point – Forest Office – Janiganj – Dewanji Bazar – Premtola – Rangirkhari. On the other hand, light vehicles from Rangirkhari will move via Premtola – Shillongpatty – DIG Office Point – Hotel Barail View – Tennis Point – PWD Road or India Club Road – Trunk Road, or via DIG Point – Annapurna Point – Debdoot – Dak Bungalow – Malugram – Sadarghat – Forest Office Lane – Court – Janiganj – Nazirpatty – Premtola – Rangirkhari.

Vehicles from Chamragudam and Bilpar will take the Kalibari Road towards Dewanji Bazar. From the Public School Road near the old Gopinath Cinema Hall, a complete No Entry will be imposed. From Janiganj, no vehicle will be allowed to move towards Tulapatty or Ukilpatty. Similarly, from Hospital Road, no vehicle can move towards Chengcoorie Road.

On the first day of Puja, from 2 PM, Link Road No. 1 will be treated as a One-Way route. Vehicles may enter from the Sonai Road side and exit through Hailakandi Road. Lochan Bairagi Road will remain a No Entry Zone from 2 PM until further notice. Light vehicles from the Sribhumi and Hailakandi sides may enter Silchar via National Highway Point – Rangirkhari Point. From India Club Point to Tarapur E & D Colony Point, no vehicles will be allowed between September 28 and October 2, starting 2 PM each day.

Vehicles from Silchar to Udharbond and Borkhola may take either the Sadarghat Old Bridge or the Annapurna Bridge (Itkhola) – Chhota Dudpatil – Moynarbond Highway – Udharbond. Meanwhile, light vehicles from Udharbond, Borkhola, and Lakhipur sides may take the route via Rongpur – Sadarghat – Capital Point – Trunk Road – India Club – Jail Road – Vivekananda Road – Ashram Road, or via Sadarghat – Forest Office Lane – Court – Janiganj – Nazirpatty – Premtola – Rangirkhari.

The use of black glass (tinted windows) in any vehicle has been strictly prohibited.

Rickshaw and Pushcart Ban

From September 28 to October 2 (Saptami, Ashtami, and Navami), between 2 PM and until further notice, rickshaws and pushcarts will not be allowed on the following stretches:

  • Rangirkhari Point – Premtola – Dewanji Bazar – Tulapatty – Annapurna Point (Old Cinema Hall)
  • Premtola Point – Ullaskar Dutta Sarani – Shillongpatti – DIG Office Point
  • Dewanji Bazar Point – Sadar Thana Point – Janiganj – Tulapatty Point – Treasury Office Point
  • India Club Point – Tarapur – E & D Colony Point

Further, no rickshaw from Rongpur will be allowed to cross the Barak Bridge into the town after 10 AM. The authorities have mentioned that these rules may change depending on the situation.

Immersion Day Guidelines

On October 2 (Vijaya Dashami), from 12 noon until further orders, no vehicle will be allowed inside the municipal area. Idol-carrying vehicles will follow designated routes:

  • From Rangirkhari side → via Premtola – Nazirpatty – Central Road – Dak Bungalow Point – immersion ghat, and will exit via Municipal Office.
  • From Tarapur side → via DIG Bungalow Point – Annapurna Point or Shillongpatti – Premtola – immersion ghat.
  • From Rangpur/Malugram side → via Capital Point – Club Road – Dak Bungalow Point – immersion ghat.
  • Exemptions will be made for Fire Brigade, Medical, Water Supply, Magistrates, and Police duty vehicles.

On immersion day, DJ boxes must be stopped at fixed points:

  • Vehicles from Central Road → at Khudiram Point.
  • Vehicles from Tarapur via Trunk Road → at Capital Point.
  • Vehicles from the Rongpur side → under the Sadarghat Old Bridge.

The administration has urged all citizens and commuters to strictly follow the guidelines for smooth traffic management and safety during Durga Puja celebrations.
