Two Heroin Hauls in Lakhipur: Drugs Worth Over Rs 2.5 Crore Seized, Five Held

Cachar police carried out two anti-drug operations on April 23 under the Lakhipur Police Station, seizing suspected heroin worth over Rs 2.5 crore in the black market and arresting five persons under the provisions of the NDPS Act, officials said. The operations were based on specific intelligence inputs and led to the interception of two vehicles allegedly used to transport the contraband.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Rajat Kumar Pal, the first operation was conducted under the Banskandi Outpost of Lakhipur Police Station based on specific information about the transportation of NDPS substances. During the operation, one person, identified as Mofizul Islam, was apprehended, and a two-wheeler was seized.

Police recovered 10 soap cases weighing 377.4 grams of suspected heroin from his possession. A factory-made pistol with four rounds of ammunition was also seized. The scooter bearing registration number AS-11AD-4061 was taken into custody.

In a separate operation on the same day, police set up a checkpoint after receiving information about a vehicle transporting illegal NDPS substances. A four-wheeler was intercepted with four occupants on board.

During the search, officials recovered five soap cases containing 140.3 grams of suspected heroin, along with mobile phones. The vehicle, a Chevrolet Beat bearing registration number AS-01 MB 5714, was seized.

The four persons apprehended in the second operation have been identified as Sabir Ahmed Barbhuiya, Sahin Ahmed Laskar, Anwar Hussain Barbhuiya, and Jalal Hussain Barbhuiya.

In both cases, the seized substances tested positive for heroin using a drug detection kit, showing a deep violet colour. All accused have been detained, and further legal action is being taken under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act. Police said the investigation is ongoing and all procedures are being followed as per the law.

The NDPS Act refers to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, a central law in India that regulates and prohibits the production, possession, sale, purchase, transport and use of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, except for medical or scientific purposes. It provides strict penalties for offences, including imprisonment and fines, depending on the quantity and nature of the substance involved.
