Work Continues to Restore Railway Tracks Between Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section; Trains Cancelled Upto June 29
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is intensifying efforts to restore the damaged Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section, which has been severely affected by multiple landslides following heavy rainfall. The disrupted stretch between KM 108/6-8 has caused significant disruption to train services, prompting large-scale restoration work.
NFR General Manager Shri Chetan Kumar Shrivastava visited the site to assess the situation, oversee the ongoing work, and boost the morale of the on-ground teams. He instructed that maximum manpower and machinery be deployed to ensure early restoration of this vital rail link in Assam.
As of now, 14,100 cubic metres of slipped earth have been removed from hill slopes, and 2,850 cubic metres cleared from the track area itself. In total, over 1.27 lakh cubic metres of debris have been removed. To further ensure slope stability and prevent future landslides, the Railway is undertaking drainage improvements, constructing 600 metres of kutcha drains, and cleaning another 400 metres of existing hillside drains. Jungle clearing and installation of geotextile protection across affected slopes have also been carried out.
Work has been challenging, especially where machinery cannot access the narrow, slippery terrain. While most debris removal from the track has been completed using eight excavators, manual clearance continues in cutting zones inaccessible by vehicles.
The presence of the General Manager has provided a major morale boost to the restoration teams, who are working round the clock to reinstate normalcy. However, in the interest of passenger safety, several trains have been fully or partially cancelled until restoration is complete.
