Three Arrested From Silchar Second Link Road For Moral Policing, Brutally Assaulting Alleged Thief

Rangirkhari police on Tuesday (May 20) arrested three individuals from the Second Link Road area in Silchar, for allegedly taking the law into their own hands by brutally assaulting a man they accused of theft. The incident, which occurred in the Uttar Krishnapur area points at rising instances of moral policing and vigilantism in the region.

According to police sources, the three accused identified as Manna Chanda, son of Monuranjan Chanda of Uttar Krishnapur Part III; Palash Das (19), son of Srikanta Das of 2nd Link Road Lane No. 14; and Swarup Chanda (30), son of Gopika Ranjan Chanda of Uttarkrishnapur Part III, were part of a group that tied the alleged thief to a vehicle and beat him with sticks and brooms in full public view.

The mob accused him of stealing a mobile phone in broad daylight from a residence in the Second Link Road, Silchar. After physical assault, they also went to the extent of shaving off the man’s head as a form of public humiliation. Shockingly, neighbours and bystanders remained silent spectators during the act of vigilantism.

Locals later attempted to justify their actions, claiming that a spate of robberies in the area had pushed them to the brink. They claimed to have filed multiple complaints with Cachar Police, but no action was taken”, said a resident on condition of anonymity.

However, when Rangirkhari Police were informed about the incident, a police team rushed to the spot and apprehended three people for this brutality.

A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
