Tension In Silchar’s Itkhola After Businessman Allegedly Calls Neighbours Bangladeshi
Silchar witnessed high tension late on Thursday night (September 11) in the Bansghat area of Itkhola after infamous businessman and Burmese areca nut mafia, Abub Mazumdar, allegedly called his neighbours Bangladeshi. Enraged locals thrashed him and vandalised his house before police intervened.
According to reports, the commotion began after locals heard loud noises and suspected fire from a godown owned by Abub. They alleged that outsiders, possibly from Bangladesh or Murshidabad, had been working inside for months. When questioned, Abub allegedly labelled the crowd “Bangladeshi” and threatened to evict them as tenants, which sparked outrage.
Hundreds of locals, mostly women, gathered outside his residence, attacked him, and damaged his property. Police led by DIG Kankan Jyoti Saikia and Cachar SSP Numal Mahatta rushed to the spot with heavy deployment, controlling the situation and detaining Abub Mazumdar.
Bajrang Dal leader Mithun Nath alleged, “Who is he to call these people Bangladeshi? His citizenship should be checked first. He tried to provoke communal unrest. He deserves severe punishment.”
Speaking from the site, SSP Numal Mahatta said, “There was a clash of words between two groups and some pushing and shoving. Our police teams brought the situation under control. People have been taken into custody for interrogation, and action will follow as per law.”
