Exodus in Congress after Aminul Haque gets ticket: 9 Sonai Mandal Congress Presidents Resign
A major internal crisis has emerged in the Sonai unit of the Congress after the party announced former BJP MLA Aminul Haque Laskar as its candidate for the Sonai Assembly constituency. Soon after the announcement, nine Mandal Congress presidents from the Sonai block resigned from their posts and primary membership, alleging that the party ignored the views of grassroots workers.
The resignations were submitted to the district president on Wednesday. The leaders who stepped down include Sonai Town Mandal president Aminul Haque Choudhury, Dakshin Mohanpur Mandal president Sahajan Ahmed Barbhuiya, Swadhin Bazar Mandal president Zahir Ahmed Barbhuiya, Didarkush Mandal president Anfar Ali Barbhuiya, Bhaurikandi Mandal president Nazrul Islam Ahmed, Kaptanpur Mandal president Altaf Hussain Laskar, Kachudaram Mandal president Abdul Haque Mazumdar, Nagdirgram Mandal president Mansur Hilal Laskar and Kazidahar Mandal president Aklash Uddin Barbhuiya.
In their resignation letters, the leaders stated that the party leadership ignored the opinion of grassroots workers while selecting the candidate. They alleged that long-time and loyal Congress workers were sidelined and that the ticket was given to a leader who had recently joined the party. According to them, this decision has weakened the organisation at the local level.
The leaders questioned the value of working for the party if the opinions of workers are not respected. They also warned that the decision could have a negative impact on the upcoming election.
Several party workers also expressed their anger on social media. Sonai Assembly Youth Congress president Rakib Mazumdar made one of the strongest remarks, accusing the party leadership of ticket trading. In a social media post, he alleged that the hard work and loyalty of genuine party workers had been sold in exchange for money and warned that the youth of Sonai would respond at the right time.
The development comes at a time when the Congress in Assam is already facing political setbacks. On Thursday, former Congress leader and three-time MLA Kamakhya Dey Purkayastha formally joined the BJP. Although he had resigned from Congress back in 2024, he was once a prominent face of opposition within the party. In recent days, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Bora also left the Congress and joined the BJP.
