Notice Over, Bulldozers In: Lakhipur Administration Clears Encroachments in Jirighat Market

The Lakhipur Sub-Divisional Administration on Saturday (June 13) carried out an eviction drive in the Jirighat market area along the Assam-Manipur border in Cachar district, removing structures that had allegedly been built on government land.

According to officials, a section of traders had occupied government land along the roadside and established temporary business establishments. The alleged encroachment had reportedly caused inconvenience to pedestrians and vehicles using the route.

The administration used excavators to demolish the structures during the operation. Officials said notices had been served to the occupants about a week earlier, asking them to remove the encroachments within a specified period.

Speaking to the media, Lakhipur Assistant Circle Officer Arif Choudhury said the administration had received complaints from members of the public regarding the encroachments.

“Public had complaints regarding encroachment. Since the public were facing issues, we are conducting this eviction drive in cooperation with the public. The people themselves are complying and understanding the issue,” he said.

He further informed that notices had been issued before the operation was carried out.

The official also stated that similar eviction drives would continue in other parts of the Lakhipur subdivision where government land is found to be under encroachment. He said the administration would continue efforts to clear such areas in the coming days.
