Sajal Acharjee Suspended as Silchar District Congress President, Arun Dutta Mazumdar Named Interim Chief

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has suspended Sajal Acharjee from the post of President of the Silchar District Congress Committee in Assam. The decision comes amid controversy over a reported move to sell the land housing the party’s district office, Indira Bhavan, in Silchar.

In a press release issued on Saturday (7 November), AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal announced that the Congress President had approved the proposal for Acharjee’s suspension. The party leadership has also approved the appointment of former Silchar District Congress President Arun Dutta Mazumdar as the interim president of the district committee.

The controversy centres on around 10 kathas of land on Park Road in Silchar, where the Congress district office, Indira Bhavan, is located. Allegations surfaced that the Cachar District Congress Committee had approached the Cachar Deputy Commissioner’s office seeking a No Objection Certificate (NOC) in connection with the proposed sale of the property.

According to the details of the application that surfaced, Sajal Acharjee was named as the seller’s representative on behalf of the district Congress committee, while Joy Kumar Saha, a resident of N N Dutta Road in Silchar, was named as the proposed buyer.

The reported move triggered strong resentment and controversy within the Congress party. Following the developments, Acharjee was issued a show-cause notice on the instructions of the Assam Pradesh Congress leadership. His powers as district president were also curtailed.

The latest decision by the AICC marks a further step in the party’s action against Acharjee amid the ongoing controversy.

With Arun Dutta Mazumdar taking charge as interim president, the developments have triggered fresh discussions in Cachar’s political circles over the future of the district Congress leadership and the controversy surrounding Indira Bhavan.
