BJP Sweeps Cachar, Congress Holds Key Ground In Barak Valley As Final Results Come In

The final results from Barak Valley’s 13 Assembly constituencies have confirmed a decisive mandate across the region, with the BJP sweeping Cachar district and making strong gains across Sribhumi and Hailakandi, while the Congress held important pockets of influence, particularly in Sonai, Karimganj North, Karimganj South and Algapur–Katlicherra.

In Cachar, the BJP delivered a near-complete sweep, winning six of the seven seats. The biggest statement came from Lakhipur, where minister Kaushik Rai registered a massive victory, polling 1,25,302 votes and winning by a margin of 99,401 votes. In Silchar, BJP’s Rajdeep Roy secured 1,10,758 votes, defeating his nearest rival by 53,997 votes. The result marks a major win for the BJP in one of Barak Valley’s most watched urban constituencies.

The BJP’s dominance continued in Udharbond, where Rajdeep Goala made a successful comeback, polling 1,03,331 votes and winning by 55,464 votes. In Borkhola, another high-decibel contest, Kishore Nath secured 1,02,775 votes and won by 36,613 votes. Dholai also stayed with the BJP, with Amiyakanti Das polling 1,00,634 votes and winning by 44,462 votes. In Katigorah, Kamalakhya De Purkayastha, contesting on a BJP ticket, polled 1,10,758 votes and won by 37,680 votes.

The only Cachar seat that went to the Congress was Sonai, where former BJP MLA Aminul Haque Laskar, now contesting as a Congress candidate, secured a significant victory. Laskar polled 89,957 votes and won by a margin of 27,170 votes, making Sonai one of the most politically significant results of the day. His win stands out not only because it denied the BJP a clean sweep in Cachar, but also because of the political shift he represented in this election.

In Sribhumi district, the verdict was split between the BJP and Congress, with each party winning two seats. Congress candidate Jakaria Ahmed won Karimganj North, polling 1,22,356 votes and securing a margin of 26,003 votes. In Karimganj South, Congress’ Aminur Rashid Choudhury recorded one of the strongest wins in the district, polling 1,37,257 votes and winning by 86,632 votes.

The BJP, meanwhile, held Patharkandi and Ram Krishna Nagar. In Patharkandi, Krishnendu Paul polled 98,101 votes and won by 46,764 votes. In Ram Krishna Nagar, Bijoy Malakar secured 1,34,013 votes, winning by a huge margin of 83,765 votes.

In Hailakandi district, the verdict was again divided. Congress candidate Zubair Anam Mazumder won Algapur–Katlicherra with the highest vote tally in Barak Valley among the declared winners, polling 1,45,661 votes and winning by a massive margin of 1,05,448 votes. In Hailakandi, BJP candidate Milon Das polled 1,19,591 votes and won by 55,817 votes.

Overall, of the 13 seats in Barak Valley, the BJP won nine, while the Congress won four. The BJP’s performance was powered by a commanding sweep in Cachar, where its candidates posted large margins across most constituencies. The Congress, however, retained relevance through emphatic victories in Sonai, Karimganj North, Karimganj South and Algapur–Katlicherra.

The results underline a clear regional pattern: the BJP remains the dominant force across Barak Valley, especially in Cachar, but the Congress continues to command influence in selected constituencies where local leadership, community equations and candidate credibility played a decisive role.
