11 Month Old Dies at SMCH, Family Levels Negligence Allegation
An 11 month old baby died at Silchar Medical College and Hospital on Saturday (July 18), triggering protests by the grieving family, who alleged that medical negligence and the administration of an additional injection led to the child’s death. Hospital authorities had not issued an official statement at the time of filing this report.
The deceased has been identified as Azad Hussain Laskar, a resident of Dakshin Mohanpur in Sonai, Cachar district. According to family members, the child was taken to the hospital after developing a mild fever and small spots on the skin, suspected to be related to an infection.
Speaking to reporters, the child’s grandfather claimed that the baby was admitted to the hospital at around 3 pm and was given an injection as part of the treatment. He alleged that the child’s condition improved afterwards and that the baby resumed playing normally while doctors waited for blood test results before considering discharge.
The family further alleged that a nurse later arrived to administer another injection. According to the grandfather, the child’s mother objected, stating that the baby had already received an injection and appeared to have recovered. However, he claimed that the injection was administered despite their objections.
The family alleged that immediately after receiving the second injection, the child developed severe distress. They further claimed that when they sought urgent assistance, nearby medical staff allegedly asked them to bring the child to them instead of responding immediately. According to the grandfather, by the time the child was taken to the staff, the baby had died.
Following the death, tensions escalated inside the hospital as family members protested, alleging gross negligence by the attending medical staff. They demanded a fair and impartial investigation into the incident and strict action against those found responsible.
A police team led by Cachar Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhaskar Saikia and officers from Silchar Sadar Police Station reached the hospital to bring the situation under control and monitor the developments.
The allegations made by the family have not been independently verified. The hospital administration had not responded to the allegations or released any official version of events at the time this report was published. An investigation is awaited to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
