20-year-old Construction Worker At Durga Mandir In Premtala Dies At Site; No Helmet, Gross Negligence Of Govt. Norms
A 20-year-old student Jitendra Das lost his life while working on the construction of Premtola Durga Mandir. The young student had recently passed his Class 12 examination and was preparing to pursue higher education and was seeking admission Cachar College. However, financial constraints compelled him to take up work at the construction site for the last two months.
The unfortunate accident occurred on a Saturday afternoon when Jitendra slipped from the top of the building, where he had climbed using a bamboo shaft. The fall resulted in severe head injuries, and despite being rushed to Silchar Medical College, Jitendra tragically succumbed to his injuries last night.
CCTV footage from Goldighi Mall, adjacent to the temple captured the accident. He had fallen on the corridor between the mall and the temple. He was not wearing any harness or protective helmet. This incident has revealed glaring lapses in safety measures at the construction site.

The Section 54 in The Building And Other Construction Workers ‘(Regulation Of Employment And Conditions Of Service) Central Rules, 1998 mentions the requirement to provide helmet and safety shoes to the labourer by the employer. It states, “The employer shall ensure that all persons who are performing any work or services at a building or other construction work, wear safety shoes and helmets conforming to the national standards”.
It has been reported by the labourers that there was no safety net in place, and adequate measures mandated by labour laws were not followed, exposing workers to unnecessary risks.
It is disheartening to learn that, Jitendra Das, a resident of Silcooire Grant had done well in his AHSEC Higher Secondary examination, the result of which was declared on May 9. He has been staying at a rented home in Rongpur’s Gangapara to continue his studies at Narsingh Higher Secondary School and was supposed to submit his application form for graduation at Cachar College on Monday, but fate had an unfortunate choice for him.
Jitendra’s decision to work despite being a student underscores the harsh reality faced by many families grappling with financial hardships. When questioned by his fellow labourers about why he was working instead of focusing on his studies, Jitendra explained the dire financial situation of his family, highlighting the difficult choices forced upon many vulnerable individuals.
