95-year-old Nirupama Barman from Cachar district beats Coronavirus to recover in 9 days
It is a well-known fact that the new strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is more lethal than its previous year’s variant. The second wave which has brought this mutated form of the coronavirus has a higher fatality rate and also spreads pretty faster damaging the lungs at a very early stage. In this scenario, aged people are at more risk of exhibiting serious symptoms and complications of coronavirus due to their aging and fragile immune system. But in an inspiring tale of grit and perseverance, a 95 year old elderly woman from Cachar district has recovered from the Coronavirus, thus showing us the way to fight this deadly virus amid such a depressing time.
Nirupama Barman, a resident of the Hawaithang village near Dholai, was tested covid positive on May 22. Naturally, this sent a huge panic among her family members. But despite the challenges, without wasting any further time, Nirupama Barman started her treatment at home with the help of her family members. On May 25, she was brought to Valley Hospital in Silchar for covid treatment. Nirupama Barman showed great fighting spirit as she beat the virus to get recovered within a span of 5 days of getting admitted to the hospital, thus setting an example of inspiration to fight this new strain of the coronavirus.
While talking to the Barak Bulletin, Nirupama Barman’s son, Debonath Barman said, “When my mother had gotten a fever, at first we thought it to be due to her fragile age. But when the fever lasted a few days, we became concerned and took her to the Dholai Health Centre to get her tested for Covid. It was there that we got the confirmation of her contracting the virus. My elder brother started panicking after getting the news as this was a huge blow to our family. So we took her home to isolate her and started home treatment. On May 25, we got her admitted to the Valley Hospital for better care and treatment. But because of her fighting spirit, she started recovering really fast and on May 30, she finally tested Covid negative.”
Debonath Barman, who lives in Silchar due to his job, said that her fast recovery even shocked the doctors treating her. “We are 7 siblings including myself. And to be honest, we all were tensed and nervous as our mother is quite aged. But also, we’ve never known her to give up and thus, she fought the deadly virus and returned home as a victor. We’re just relieved now that we got our mother back to her former self and thank the doctors and nurses of the Valley Hospital for taking such good care of her.”
He also said that during her brief stay there at the hospital, she has developed a form of attachment for the nurse who took care of her. “She’s such a kind soul that the nurse who took care of her during her treatment, she still keeps asking about her and thanks to her for her unflinching support and care”, said Debonath Barman. The story of Nirupama Barman’s recovery from the clutches of the coronavirus is indeed a tale of grit and courage.
